Google Pixel 4a Review: Simple and Clean

August 4, 2020 by Shankar Jaiswal Leave a Comment

Google Pixel 4aIt’s finally here google pixel 4a. And this is a really simple one. So the 3a was google’s budget phone with a great camera.Google Pixel 4a Review here. Double down on that so this 350 bucks is google’s budget phone with an excellent camera and that’s really it.

It doesn’t take long using this phone to figure that out. By the time you see this I’ve been using it for almost a week now.

And really the formula here is keep it simple. Everything here is really clean and simple. I mean just for starters look at it.

You know it’s the plastic build as we’ve all seen. And it’s all one piece so you can see there’s no seams anywhere.

Simple then there’s the spec sheet there is one size, one color, one spec simple. The whole phone is about the same size as the iphone 11 pro. But noticeably lighter of course thanks to the plastic. And i like the size I think it’s a good one size to have.

And with that on the front of the phone you’re getting a 5.8 inch 1080p led display. Flat screen 60 hertz and that hole punch cut out for the selfie camera.

Some people don’t like the hole punch. To me honestly really I’ve gotten used to it by now. And it’s better than a notch. It’s not the most incredible display but there’s definitely no big issues with it. You’re still looking at well over 400 pixels per inch.

And I’ve noticed a pretty decent range of brightness and some good viewing angles. The no high refresh rate at this price isn’t a deal breaker. But we’ll get to performance in a second and then the rest of this hardware package is simple.

Google Pixel 4a

#Google Pixel 4a Review: Simple and Clean

You guessed it you’re on the same page now it’s very simple. It’s all matte black everything. All the way around giving it not a soft touch feel but more of like this powder coated slight texture. And I like it and of course there’s a signature pixel accented light green power button. And actually these buttons are super clicky.

They’re pretty loud too. I think they’re the best feeling part of this phone. And there’s an honestly pretty disappointing single mono speaker at the bottom. But in positive news there is still a headphone jack up top it lives on with the budget pixel line.

Now with a lot of phones back a couple years ago I used to always have this moment. Where I would you know bend it twist it see if I can feel any weird creaking or anything happening with the phone.

And I sort of slowed down and stopped doing that because pretty much every phone now is fine in that department plus does his durability tests. But I got my pixel 4a and I started to do that a little. And there is actually a little bit of bending to it.

I don’t know if zack’s gotten his yet but i’m pretty sure when he does. And he does his test. I’m predicting it’s going to snap in half I don’t think the plastic unibody build is the most durable.

But on the upside it’s not glass which means it won’t shatter. So you know there’s ups and downs again. With this whole thing we have to keep the price in mind 350 bucks. So I am totally fine with a matte black unibody plastic build.

Also if you’re clumsy or worried about dropping your phone you already know channel sponsored dbrand’s got you covered with their made by google certified grip case.

It’s grippier than the naked phone. And yes it comes in matte black or literally any other color. My favorite part of this hardware though and maybe it’s the best example of them. Truly keeping it simple is the fingerprint reader still on the back.

Google Pixel 4a

#Google Pixel 4a Review: Simple and Clean

Same place It was on the pixel 3a and the pixel 2 and the original pixel and the nexus 6p and the nexus 5x.Look the point is this is the tried and true place to put it zero problems with this fingerprint reader on the back here. But look this is the pixel 4a.

And we all know the reason we’re here and it’s the cameras. And they’re really good spoiler alert again with photos. So there is a single camera on the back. It kind of resembles the multi-camera setups with the rounded rectangle but without spending the extra money for extra useless cameras nice.

And so it’s just one camera and a flash 12 megapixel sensor at f 1.7 with ois. The numbers aren’t too crazy but the photos you get are exactly what we’d expect right in the same style as pixel 4.

If anything just a little bit softer. But it has that confident, contrasty, high dynamic range look. And great color that we’re used to from the pixel. Which is so awesome at this price. Night sight still super clean.

I mean these are great photos for a 350 phone. And thanks to that I’m totally fine with it being the single camera on the back. Like do I miss the ultra wide a little bit yeah I came from a phone with an ultra wide.

So I guess a little bit but at this price I’m not mad. Do I miss the depth sensor at all. I mean with a single camera. Google’s been doing really good portrait mode photos of animals and humans and all kinds of objects.

So I don’t miss the depth sensor at all. Do I miss the 2 megapixel macro camera? “No” so keeping it simple just works great here. I don’t think anyone’s going to be mad.

This isn’t quad cameras and that also translates to the software experience as well. I remember when I reviewed the pixel 2 I called it the smartest smartphone. Mainly thanks to a lot of google features on top of android. Now this budget version carries a couple less of those googly features.

But I still really like the ones it has. Like there is no squeeze for assistant. They couldn’t build that into the hardware. But you can always swipe up diagonally from the corner and that gets you to google assistant.

Just as fast. There is no project sole or radar sensors up in the front of this phone but it still has rays to wake with the accelerometer and gyroscope.

And you can turn this on or off. And it has some of those pixel exclusive features. It has live caption available everywhere and I still love call screening. And the now playing which identifies songs in the background wherever you go and keeps a running list of them.

Like every time I switch back to a pixel I love these features and I miss them on other phones. But also like pixel 3a performance on the 4a on this phone is not that great.

Now at first I thought it was just me over realizing it because I just come from these super high end 120 hertz phones. But just having a 60 hertz phone shouldn’t be a death sentence for smoothness.

Phones were all 60 hertz a couple years ago and smoothness was fine. So it’s a little more than that. I feel like the snapdragon 730g is probably a lot more to blame here.

And I couldn’t stop noticing that it just wasn’t very smooth. The phone just doesn’t feel fast I guess is the main point which concerns me for how long it will last.

#Google Pixel 4a Review: Simple and Clean

You know this is one of the bigger sticking points among a lot of the budget phones coming out now is.

When you extrapolate their value over time. You’re kind of up against the gold standard of iphone se but this phone has some of the same issues pixel 3a had. Which you know didn’t stop people from loving pixel 3a.

As it’s still a great camera in a phone for the price. But again you should know what you’re getting into. But of course there is one more area where pixel 3a outperforms the numbers on paper.

And that’s the battery. So this phone has a 3140 milliamp hour battery.Doesn’t seem like that high of a number because it’s not uh the one plus nord had like a 25 bigger battery.

I wasn’t expecting it to be great but of course I should know better because it’s a 1080p 60hz screen. And I was pleasantly surprised with the battery on the 4a.

Now again all this is quarantine lifestyle testing. So it comes with the asterisk that all the rest of the phones have had. But if I’m getting five hours of screen on time comfortably with this phone and ending the day with 10 to 20 left consistently.

I don’t think anyone will have problems with the pixel 4a’s battery. So simply put that’s about it for this really simple phone. For some people it’s kind of forgettable but for others it’s exactly what we’re waiting for this new pixel. It’s doubled down on everything the 3a had going for it and lowered the price.

And so for this price, the lack of wireless charging or ip rating or glass and metal and stereo speakers and extra cameras. Really isn’t a deal breaker. In fact it’s expected the simple plastic build as expected the 60hz screen is fine.

The biggest upside is still the camera and the biggest downside is still the performance. It’s really just the only difference now is the existence of much more competition in this space with phones like oneplus nord and iphone se.

Now technically this phone undercuts them both in price. Which is going to matter to a lot of people 350 bucks is an insane price for the amount of phone you’re getting here and all these features.

But each one of these phones is going to have its own distinct advantages. Iphone and nord are going to be better performers. Iphone’s going to take better video. But you get more google features here.

Better stills camera so it’s what you want. I just really love that it feels like google’s getting a little more competitive with this pixel phone. Getting that lower price to undercut the competitors to give you a reason to buy it.

It’s great I just hope this translates into them making a true high-end pixel 5 flagship. Now I don’t know if that’s smart to get my hopes up.

For that considering their track record is not very good for flagships. But that’s what I’m hoping this competitiveness translates into.

Apple’s Big Secret in 2020 for what Apple isn’t telling us yet.

WWDC 2020 was rock solid but I’m more excited for what Apple isn’t telling us yet. Apple’s Big Secret in 2020

I think people will find the macarons awfully nice on that that system. It’s not a basis on which to judge future max of course. But it gives you a sense of well. What our silicon team can do when they’re not even trying. Huge week for Apple this week at WWDC iOS 14. By far their biggest move was their announcement of the transition from intel-based Mac’s over to their own Apple custom powered Mac.

So for starters the entire Mac OS Big Sur demo at WWDC was done using custom Apple powered Mac minis. Inside these Mac minis was an a12 Z Bionic the same exact chip found in the 20/20 iPad pro. So things are starting to make a lot more sense now.

developer transition spec tech

So what it looks like is these Mac Mini developer kits are essentially iPad pro insides smacked into Mac Mini bodies. And with that a 12 Z Bionic is pretty close to the a 12 X that was found in the 2018 iPad pro. The only real difference being one more GPU core being unlocked.

For contrast on why this is so exciting the 20/20 iPad pro in terms of raw CPU power. Essentially outperforms the fastest 2013 inch macbook pro. For good measure let’s toss in a 2016 15 inch MacBook Pro and that makes it pretty clear.

Apple’s Big Secret in 2020

How fast Apple’s advancing in terms of their own chips. And then from there in terms of graphics performance looking at metal scores that 20/20 iPad pro is essentially on par again with the fastest 13-inch MacBook Pro. And keep in mind those 10th jeanna integrated graphics were a huge jump over the previous jennifer intel.

Now they technically are two different platforms but if you remember at the keynote. Craig was using that a 12z powered Mac Mini to run Final Cut Pro 10. The playback was smooth with titles, with effects.

He even stated that this configuration of the a 12 Z could support up to three streams of 4k progress playback which is exciting. Because in theory the current iPad pro can also handle that workload.

So impressive yes but what didn’t make sense is Craig was up on stage flexing absurd amounts of protists play XD ours. Which are won 6k displays in to Thunderbolt 3 and that right.

There is where things get super interesting. In a nutshell Thunderbolt 3, that’s an Intel thing so in theory with Apple Edition Intel they’re also ditching Thunderbolt 3. So how are they driving these displays exactly.

Simple theory looking at that Mac Mini developer kit which still packs a USB three flavor in a USBC form factor is that they’re down scaling the 5k. But that doesn’t seem like a super Apple kind of move.

What I think is happening is that Mac Mini used at WWDC is a custom Apple version. That’s not going developers that packs USB for us. Before essentially doubles the bandwidth of USB 3.2 taking that bandwidth up to 40 gigabits a second.

Where the secret sauce is at though is a keeps that USB C form factor. But implements Thunderbolt 3 license free which is huge news for us before clip computers period.

So that’s what makes most sense to me with USB for slated to hit by the end of the year that lines up perfectly. With Apple’s goal of trying to deliver the first Apple powered Mac by the end of the year.

apple laptop set

What about that a 12v iPad pro power developer Mac Mini though. Craig actually confirmed that that’s for development only. It’s actually never shipping to customers even that that DTK developer transition kit. Hardware which is running on a you know an existing iPad chip that that we you know don’t intend to put in a Mac.

And the future it’s just there for this this transition. I think people will find the macarons awfully nice on that that system. Keep in mind that was the maya demo with rosetta to not only Final Cut Pro. But Lightroom Photoshop it also gaming with shadow of the Tomb.

Apple’s Big Secret in 2020

Absolutely apple secret, look at these look at these silicon Apple silicon based max and judge us by deeds. We even know what we need to do at this point to have people understand how much we are committed to making Max. And keeping the max and we  go to tremendous efforts actually.

To continue to keep that true I mean to find ways to advance security in an environment. That we believe like the Mac should be open to hobbyist experimentation and things. These are things we put you know the fact that we have these different modes to explicitly turn off system integrity protection.

Why did we do that? We didn’t have to. We did it because we want Mac users to who want to do hobbyist things to have that kind of power. I mean we continue to demonstrate over and over. How we feel about this.

So specifically what that means is, there’ll be a reduced security mode that allows the user to disable the normal system integrity protection and run any version of Mac OS.

They did confirm that there will be no support for boot camp or essentially just booting into x86 off apple silicon. Anything in that world will be virtualization based and while they did only showcase Linux at the keynote.

They are looking into options for Windows as well. Now if we hang out with Marty and Doc and hop in the DeLorean take a trip back to 2005 there are so many similarities with that keynote compared to today.

With the move from PowerPC over to Intel, Apple also shipped a developer based Mac for that transition as well. The eerily similar part with that is that was equipped with a Pentium 4 processor which never shipped to customers. It is a development platform only.

  • OnePlus Nord Impressions Back to Budget!

Apple’s Big Secret in 2020

This is not a product this will never be shipped as a product that’s just for you. To get started in development and actually you have to return them by the end of 2006 because we don’t want them floating around out there. These are not product.

I think the only thing I’m really curious about right now after all this information is will Apple just go solely Apple or will they include and implement all the work that they’ve done with AMD as well.

Right so imagine that a 12c scaled up three four five six times and then paired with an AMD GPU in an iMac that sounds amazing. There is always a chance that Apple has something up their sleeve that’s so far advanced. We have no idea is coming either way exciting times again.

OnePlus Nord Impressions Back to Budget!

July 27, 2020 by Shankar Jaiswal 1 Comment

oneplus nord
Oneplus Nord Phone

I have been using the Oneplus Nord for quite a few weeks now actually maybe the longest. I’ve ever used something pre-launch but Oneplus is one of those companies where they have a separate impressions embargo for unboxings and stuff.

I’d give you guys this quick review of all the official stuff about Oneplus nord in one place so the spec, the design, the hardware and some of the important stuff like the availability and the price.

So this is everything you need to know. Here’s a better crispy high resolution at nord and these two colors are blue marble and gray onyx. It’s not bad but my take is pretty mixed on the design so remember when carl showed those prototype designs that they were considering before they scrapped them. Then went with the more traditional design.

I actually like those designs more than the one they settled on like these had a little more character. They had that matte finish. They had a little more unique and identifiable features. But they ended up going back here to a more recognizable oneplus design. Which basically means the vertical camera module on the back which fair you know. That’s been a oneplus thing for a little while.

I’m just saying but the point of the oneplus nord is to move down in price so we’ve all heard.  The oneplus story a thousand times but they’ve been creeping up and up and up slowly in price over the ears. As they approach flagship status and use more and more expensive parts.

So people started to wonder are they just leaving the whole cheap phone thing are they abandoning what got them so many fans in the first place. Which was great phones for a low price.

And so with nord they’re back at that and to be honest it seems like this is about as good. As an overall package as you’re going to get for the price. Specifically because this phone isn’t available in the us or North America at all but we’ll get to that in a second.

What are the surprise features of the OnePlus Nord?

⇒ SNAPDRAGON 765G

⇒ 8GB/12GB

⇒ 12GB/256GB

⇒ up front is a flat 6.4 inch 1080p 90 hertz amoled display with the fingerprint reader underneath and 180 hertz touch sampling rate that’s pretty nice.

What could be the estimated price of the OnePlus Nord?

⇒ 8GB/12GB (399 euro)

⇒ 12GB/256GB (499 euro)

You can tell it’s not quite the tippy top flagship stuff we expect for higher prices. Of course a 900 or thousand dollar phone will have a higher refresh rate. And even higher resolution and just overall better quality panels.

But even at 1080p here you’re looking at over 400 pixels per inch. And most people spending 400 bucks on a phone can’t tell the difference between 90 hertz and 120 hertz and the whole thing gets pretty close to the bezels.

Basically this does not feel like a cheap phone screen at all. And it’s also got the dual hole punch cutout at the front and just overall it’s a pretty nice display. The fingerprint reader from what i can tell is about. The same as what I’ve seen in other oneplus phones it’s optical and it’s pretty low on the phone.

So it’s actually easy to reach and then behind that display powering everything is a 4115 milliamp hour battery, pretty good sized battery. It comes with warp charge 30t charger in the box. So you’re getting fast charging that we’re used to with other oneplus phones included at this price.

So that’s like zero to 70% charge in half an hour if you need it that is always nice to have. Now there is no wireless charging in this phone. There’s no official IP water or dust resistance rating and while we’re at it there’s a couple other places they save money.

They’ve used UFS 2.1 storage and they’ve used USB 2.0 data speeds. Even though you still have fast charging so there’s some places where they’ve cut it back. But if you’ve been paying attention you’ve probably noticed something by now which is unlike a lot of the other budget phones I’ve reviewed especially lately this doesn’t go super all in on one spec and then kind of skimp on the rest. This definitely feels like a much more balanced package.

The build quality is definitely here you have metal and glass you got that alert slider. We’re used to the 90 hertz oled display is a great place to start. You have a pretty good sized battery with fast charging.

A pretty nice set of specs again this isn’t the review but the 765g has some pretty good performance results. So far and that’s paired with plenty of ram. So maybe with a budget phone you’re hearing all this you’re like oh i know. So the camera’s trash right that’s usually how it goes cheap phone, cheap camera.

Here’s a scoop on the camera so it is a quad camera system. So you start with a 48 megapixel main camera an 8 megapixel ultrawide camera and then a 2 megapixel macro camera. And then a 5 megapixel depth sensor so it’s like okay they can say it’s a quad camera system. But most people most people are just going to be using the first two cameras. And then the main camera is actually the same camera same hardware as the oneplus 8.

Not the oneplus 8 pro the oneplus 8 so again this isn’t my review that review will have my photo samples and video samples from this camera system. And the selfie cameras you got a 32 megapixel selfie camera and then a second 8 megapixel ultra wide selfie camera up front.

I got to be testing all those things but a couple things on the camera one oneplus phone has called. It like a flagship quality camera. I wouldn’t call it a flagship camera. I’ll say the oneplus 8 pro has what I consider a flagship quality camera. Because it’s their flagship and that stays up to par with the samsungs and apples and huawei’s of the world.

Oneplus phone does have a pretty great track record. At least from my experience of improving camera quality over time with software updates.

So while this isn’t you know the highest and most amazing camera. This is now a couple months or multiple months into the development in this camera system. So it’s going to be better than some of the garbage. We’ve seen in other 400 android phones and then I do like that they have dual selfie cameras up.

The one standard one ultra wide instead of like some borderline useless depth sensor. So if you’re going to do the dual cutout which this is the first time oneplus has actually ever done two cameras up front.

You might as well make use of it so they got the pillbox cut out and two cameras. So my full analysis of these cameras of this new chipset and the performance. Of course all the other stuff the screen and everything that goes with it will be in the full review. So definitely enter make sure you’re among the first to see that.

If you haven’t already but basically if I’m remembering my first impressions. Well enough it’s that this is a pretty promising package. They’ve kept up because of that balance a lot of the fast and smooth stuff pretty well. So the most important thing left then is availability.

So with this first nord phone oneplus is focusing on India, China and Europe. So it’s not coming to North America this is your list of launch countries here.

Oneplus Nord Phone Launch Availability:

launch availability

So you can see if your country is or isn’t on that list not the widest launch ever. But we also learned at least from when I was talking to carl in that interview. That there will be more phones later in the nord lineup with other names. That may come to the united states or to North America or to other regions that aren’t listed in that graphic.

So most people who aren’t in those regions probably won’t get their hands on this phone. Probably won’t be importing it because that’s not something most people do. And if you can’t get your hands on a nord which let’s face it that’s a lot of people.

You definitely still have the option of these matte pastel skins which are available across channel sponsor dbrand’s entire device catalog for every device.

So there’s probably something in there for you. There you have it that’s everything you need to know about oneplus nord right off the jump my take kind of like.

I’ve said is it’s that overall steady package of nothing too crazy but not skimping on almost anything. A lot of phones in this price range like if we take out IPHONE SC. Because that’s the other giant gorilla in the room at this exact price.

This seems like one of those better well-rounded things you can get. You’re going to get a big battery, fast charging, pretty nice screen high refresh rate, 5g compatibility. There’s a lot going here turns out the reason people wanted oneplus to come back to this lower price. Make a device in this space it’s because they’re pretty good at it.
